Petite Clothing

There is a common misconception that petite means skinny, but the reality is that petite clothes have more to do with your height than your weight. Petite sizes in fashion are more about the special patterns that are cut for women under about 5’4” or 5’3”. Petite maxi dresses are a great example of a style that needs to be specifically designed for shorter women – regular maxi dresses would drag on the ground. 

As well as being shorter, petite women also tend to have narrower shoulders and shorter arms, meaning shoulders and sleeves need to be designed to fit the measurements of the petite woman, to avoid looking like clothes are the wrong size. Petite women often have shorter torsos, so tailored waists sit in the wrong spot if patterns aren’t specifically designed for the petite shape, and shorter legs, which means the inseam needs to be adjusted for pants or jumpsuits to fit right.

Should I Wear Petite Sizes? 

If you’re shorter in stature, you will almost always find that the petite sizes suit your body shape better – especially for styles like petite maxi dresses – but again, there are exceptions. If you have broad shoulders or long arms, regular-fit tops may be better for you. If you’re petite with long legs, you may find regular-fit pants are better. 

The solution is as simple as trying on styles you like in both the regular sizes and petite sizes – you may be surprised by what works best for your body type. Remember that each brand will have different measurements for their range of petite clothing.
